Top seeded Americans Sean RosenthalPhilip Dalhausser and lucky qualifiers John HydenTri Bourne also secured their berths in the top 16 round with unbeaten records in respective groups.

Other undefeated pool winners include newly-crowned Fuzhou Open champions Paolo NicolaiDaniele Lupo of Italy, Pedro SalgadoEmanuel Rego from Brazil, Spain's Pablo Herrera AllepuzAdrian Gavira Collado and Latvia's Aleksandrs SamoilovsJanis Smedins.

GibbPatterson, who had claimed their first World Tour title together in Shanghai last year, held off Chinese tandem Chen ChengLi Jian 2-1 (21-13, 19-21 http://www.airforce1shoesuk.com/nike-air-force-1-green.html , 15-11) to win Pool H with a 3-0 record.

"It was a good match for us, we had to play very hard," said Patterson. "They are a very good team. It's the first time we play either of those guys. The blocker is very good and I think he is probably the best player in the Chinese teams."

Dropping the first set easily, the home duo fought bravely in the second. Chen stopped Gibb to give the Chinese team an 18-16 advantage and they held to 20-19 before a serving error of Gibb awarded the second set to China. In the tie-breaker, the Americans jumped to a 9-5 lead and went on to clinch the victory in 52 minutes.
