Magnolia overhauled a 20-point deficit to secure http... a 105-103 victory against defending champion San Miguel Beer in Game 1 of their PBA Philippine Cup best-of-7 finals at the Araneta Coliseum on Friday.
After playing catch-up in the first three quarters, the Hotshots unloaded a 10-0 run in the final period to engage the Beermen in a tight match.Ian Sangalang had one of the best performances of his career, firing 29 points to go with his 9 rebounds, while taking on the unenviable task of defending against JuneMar Fajardo.
Veteran Rafi Reavis only had 6 points for the Hotshots, but his picture-perfect block on Arwind Santos preserved Magnolia’s tight victory over the more experienced San Miguel.Aldrech Ramos and Mark Barroca added 15 and 15 points, respectively.
"It was all about defense in the second half. it was a defensive effort on JuneMar and their guards," said Victolero in the post-game interview. He also marveled on his players' composure despite lagging by as much as 20 points.

"We're down by 20 pero di sila nag-give up eh. That's the character na nakuha namin sa past experience. Hopefully ma-sustain namin ang energy na ito."The Beermen were in control during the first half, wherein Fajardo and Alex Cabagnot wrought havoc in the shaded lane for a 63-47 halftime advantage.
The Beermen jacked the lead to 20 points early in the third, 72-52, and appeared to be heading to an easy Game 1 victory. But the Hotshots patiently trimmed the deficit to 14 points before launching their full attack in the payoff period.
Magnolia got its first taste of the lead after Mark Barroca’s follow up, 101-100, with 1:23 remaining.
Marcio Lassiter’s triple later tied the count, 103-all, but Fajardo gave up a costly foul on Sangalang, one that allowed the Magnolia big man to give the Hotshots a 2 points lead via a couple of free throw shots, with 16 seconds to go.
From then on, San Miguel desperately tried to come back. However, Cabagnot muffed a tough 3-point attempt h... and Santos’s jumper got foiled by Reavis, paving the way for Magnolia’s Game 1 win.Four of San Miguel's players scored in double digits.
Fajardo had 31 points, Cabagnot and Lassiter had 27 and 21 markers, respectively. Santos had 19 markers. But this went down the drain after their fourth-quarter collapse.San Miguel coach Leo Austria was frustrated by their loss.
"We led by 20 points and we end up losing the game, it's very disappointing and frustrating," he said. "I wasn't able to react ... Scott Niedermayer Jersey and it's my fault."But he said the series has just started."The good thing it's a championship. They have to beat us 4 times before they will be declared as champions," added Austria.
