ACCRA, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Ghana Rugby Union, in collaboration with the Tag Rugby Trust, a rugby-based charity in the United Kingdom, Friday held a competition for children in eight schools in the national capital.

This was after the Trust had introduced basic concepts of rugby without contact to the children in 4-hour training sessions over the past week by coaches from the Trust.

A team of experienced coaches from the Trust has been in Ghana for 10 days to introduce rugby to the children with a full educational syllabus.

A Tag rugby competition was held for the eight schools on Friday.

Hundreds of schoolchildren took part in the maiden edition of the tournament which aims to arouse interest in the game among children and young adults.

Gifty Elspeth Annan-Myers, president of Ghana Rugby Association (GRA), said rugby was a mass sport and that the body was using the tag rugby now as a way of encouraging mass participation in rugby.

It is also to calm the fright of people who worry about the sport, seeing it as too dangerous to play.

"For the people who are cautious and have always seen contact rugby as something too dangerous to play, now we have tag rugby. It ushers you into rugby in a safe environment. You know it; enjoy it before moving into contact.

Rugby is a mass sports so this is the way to get the masses involved," she said.

She said the Trust team had trained teachers in various schools and would be left with the equipment to organize tournaments and ensure the number of children who played in their immediate schools was scaled up.

"So, it's not a nine-day's wonder; it's actually a program which is followed and these teachers who have been trained are now coaches who are going to follow that program <a title="Drew Nowak Jersey" href="http://www.teamseahawksstore.com/women-drew-nowak-seahawks-jersey-sale/"... A Trustee of the Tag Rugby Trust, Rob Newman, said his outfit hoped to create a whole line of children to grow up with the sport and get into the senior game in the future.

"What we are relying on are the coaches that we have trained over the last week. They are confident enough to continue with the game and as they continue with it, we promote it and we can build it. I know the children are going to grow into a fantastic industry," said Newman.

Despite being formed only in 2005, the Ghana National Rugby Union Team has improved rapidly with a number of competitions under its belts.
